When anyone at work doesn’t want to assemble something I seem to get it. Today a Ford truck lock for a spare tire hoist. Time: 10 minutes, most difficult part is bending over the small tabs on the chrome cap without destroying it.

Not to bad a lock cylinder. In the past two years I’ve built about 2k of the Cobalt ones for the GM recall so at times I don’t even want to see a cylinder anymore but yesterday I must have been in the correct frame of mind, plus I just got a fresh cup of coffee so that helps,

Hey Dave,

A pal on another forum refers to a five-speed overdrive trans that is or was used on GM 3/4-ton pickups. Any ideas on that?

Also, do you have any idea if the front door latches on a ‘71 van would interchange with a pickup od the same vintage?

Do you run a parts counter at a dealership?

Yes I’m a GM dealership front counter parts guy. I talk to over the counter customers and lots of outside shops. I’ll toot my own horn since this is an old post and most won’t see it. I was one of the last guys to go to a GM awards trip during the bankruptcy. I was in Vegas as one of the top 600 GM parts and service people in the US.

I’ll check Friday on those things. The transmission I’m thinking is set up for hydraulic clutch and would need a bunch of mods to install. Would need to see out if crank had an input shaft pilot bearing of same size. Will see what I can figure out.

Hello Dave, I have three or four good threads going on this ‘71 Vandura, a couple of them on another forum. In one of those threads, and I cannot seem to locate the post, a guy mentions a five-speed manual transmission that GM installed in 3/4-ton trucks from, like, 82-90. I’m not certain about the year gap, but it’s similar to that. Can you learn me any specifics on that transmission?

Sounds like the MG5 or HM 290 which is a Muncie 5 speed (MG= Muncie Gear). The issue with it will be parts availability for any internal parts because it mostly discontinued but you could always buy a second for spare parts. If looking at those measure the length of different ones they varied. Most will require moving a crossmember and altering driveshaft.

The front door latches are the same on all G model vans from 1971 to 1995. Truck ones were different and discontinued years ago. Van ones still available new but about $199 retail each. Newest part numbers LH 15993027 or RH 15993028 . Original numbers were 335765 lh & 335766 rh but have superceded about 8 times since then. Search wrecking yard for good used or the web and you should be able to come up with newer. Maybe even look at eBay.

ANCIENT PARTS CATALOG. The electronic catalog only goes back to 1973 on trucks, had to break out the old paper one.

No, but I’m pretty sure even without digging for the old parts books that its the same as vans up to 74. They made design changes after that up to about 77-78 but can probably retrofitted. I’d start measuring and taking pictures. The main body and frame changed little over the years until the Express/Savana vans so you can likely do upgrades using some components from many years until those.

I watch a lot of Roadkill and Roadkill Garage. In fact, I’d have to be stuck on a deserted island to miss an episode. They’re always doing drivability upgrades to suspensions, but I can’t find any of that stuff online. Maybe it’s just that nobody makes any of those parts for a van.

For something that old look at Rock Auto. They have shafts with bushings and ball joints for rebuilding your control arms. Pretty much these days if they don’t have something its a wrecking yard , ebay search or upgrade situation.
